AWARDS

The Energy Scholarship Award is presented each year to a student majoring in energy policy analysis and/or energy modelling at SFU’s School of Resource and Environmental Management (Master’s Degree Program). This award has been in place since 1993.

The Energy Research and Development Award recognizes outstanding R&D achievement in the field of energy technology. A broad spectrum of potential energy technologies are eligible for this award, including those related to energy extraction, conversion, transportation, and utilization. Evaluative criteria include:

  • the degree of innovation
  • commercial market potential
  • British Columbia content
  • environmental benefits
  • indirect benefits (such as productivity increases and product quality improvement)

Past winners in this category include:

1997: Westport Innovations Inc. of Vancouver and University of British Columbia: Development of high-pressure, direct-injection natural gas fueling systems for heavy duty diesel engines.

1996: The Integrated Boiler Company Ltd., Surrey, B.C.: High-efficiency boiler for residential applications.

1995: Ballard Power Systems Inc., Burnaby, B.C.: Fuel cell-powered, zero-emission transit bus.

The Applied Energy Innovation Award recognizes innovative demand-side management or alternative energy projects which have been implemented in British Columbia. It is distringuished from the R&D award in that it is limited to operational projects installed in commercial applications, as opposed to projects in the laboratory, pilot plant, or design phases of development. Evaluative criteria for this award include:

  • demonstrated energy savings (or energy output in the case of alternative energy projects)
  • the degree of innovation
  • British Columbia content
  • environmental benefits
  • indirect benefits (such as productivity increases and product quality improvement

Past winners in this category include:

1997: Salt Lick Projects Ltd., Vancouver: Commercial ground source heat pump installation.

1996: BC Research, BC Gas, Lordco Auto Parts, Canmet, Gas Technology Canada and other participants: A low-emission natural gas vehicle demonstration project.

1995: Elkview Coal Corporation of Sparwood, B.C.: Elkview Mine energy management program.

The Science Fair Award recognizes the British Columbia student (Grades 9 through 12) who achieves the highest standing for an energy-related innovation/invention project at the British Columbia Regional Science Fairs. This award is open to a wide range of projects related to energy, including energy extraction, transportation, conversion and utilization. The CIE will provide funding to support the award to be distributed to the winning student in June 1999.
